Roses
She wondered if Ruth had waited by the window. If she had eventually stopped waiting. If she had planted the roses anyway, stubbornly, year after year, as a kind of faith — or a kind of argument with the universe.
There was no way to know. Ruth was gone. Thomas was surely gone.
But the handwriting was so careful. So certain.
